Sometimes I am asked, “Swamiji, how should I conduct myself so that the entire life is one of tapas, religious discipline?” The word tapas generally evokes an image of someone going through a rigorous physical endurance for the achievement of a goal. One may undergo religious austerities to gain something – wealth, fame etc. — in this life or to achieve a loka such as svargaloka after death. Tapas would thus indicate giving up certain comforts and facilities now for a future gain.
However, almost everything one does in life is, in effect, a tapas. As a student, one focuses attention on his/her studies, in order to achieve good results in the examinations and (hopefully) gain some knowledge of various subjects, giving everything else only secondary importance….(Click read more for the full article)
